button2 Mens Attire

Jacket

The longer jacket is a key fashion entry, but the length must fit the body type of the groom and his groomsmen.

You might want to check out a dinner jacket, a tailcoat, a morning suit as well as a double-breasted tuxedo.

The popular choice for the wedding party is the single-breasted tuxedo jacket, and these have a wide variety of styles, beyond the options in the length of the jackets.

Sometimes the groom opts for a jacket that is different from the groomsmen, such as wearing a tailcoat.

Jackets may have a shawl collar or a notch, double notch, peak or double peak lapel- and the collar may be the same fabric as the rest of the jacket (which usually is wool) or an alternate fabric, like grosgrain or satin.

The jacket, itself, may be a one-button, right up to a five button.

Formal Shirt

The shirt collar may be a laydown spread, wing, standup or banded collar. The shirt itself, may e pleated or plain. Available shirt colours are usually white, ivory, gray and black.

Formal Tie

The tie can be a neckband, a bow tie, crossover, eurotie sharpei, zipper, four-in-hand, Ascot or Windsor.

Vest and Cummerbund

Cummerbunds were once the choice, but vests have grown immensely in popularity. (Some men like the because, if they take off their jackets when the formal part of the reception is over, they feel well put together.)

The choices are endless, from small prints (like paisley) and stripes to solid colours like grey, charcoal, gold, wine, hunter green, navy, champagne, burgundy as well as black, ivory and white.

The choice will depend on the height and weight of the groom and his groomsmen and the formality o the event. Then, have a field day, as you zero in on the perfect suit.

Money Watching

Q. My fiance wants us to cut back on the food at the reception and have a cash bar. I would rather host a great reception and have fewer guests, do without a wedding cake, limousines and other frills. What do you think?

A. It is insulting to expect friends to give you a shower and wedding gifts and then treat them shabbily. You are hosting the biggest party of your life, and certainly it should be done well ( and never ever with a cash bar.) Your method of cutting back common sense.

Head table behavior

Q. We recently attended a wedding where, at the head table, the men took off their jackets, the women took off their shoes and they hooted and hollered throughout the toasts.  My fiance thought it was fun. I thought it was appalling.

A. Men keep their jackets on. Women keep their shoes on. Freshening makeup is done in th epowerd rom, not at the table. No smoking at the head table. Attention should be paid to those who are at the mircophone. This is, after all, a grown-up event, not a highschool grad.

Music Please

Q. My fiance loves rock. I like jazz. He wants the place jumpin with music from teh moment peopole arrive at the reception until they leave, some five hours later. Any general guides about music?

A. Sure. Keep the music as a background during dinner so conversation can be enjoyed without shouting. Have music that older guests will enjoy early in the evening. They will leave before your younger guests, and then let the place rock.

No carnations

Q. WHy do almost all male attendants have a carnation s a boutonniere? I have never liked carnations. Is there some signifcance?

A. The significance is that it is a practical flower that won’t wilt, as more delicate flowers will. If you don’t like carnations, a small rosebud is a nice option.

Trendy or traditional

Q. My mother is imploring me to not streak my hair odd colours on my wedding day. I say classic translates as boring. Comment please?

A. Here’s and interesting test. Go to the library and look at some wedding pictures taken 10, 15, 20 years ago. See which have stood the test of time. Then make your decision.

There are certain realities that come into play when you assess your body. Once they are accepted, you can set your goals and go to work.

First, don’t use your favorite celebrity as your ideal. Each body has it’s own imperatives that cannot be changed.

Second, look at your body in a mirror, nude and full length, and do a general assessment.

Third, decide what is possible ( and be absolutely realistic about the possibilities).

Achieving Balance

Accept your personal genetics; you can’t change having a large bone structure, there’s a limit to how much wide hips can be decreased, and how much you can add to narrow shoulders. Don’t fight these inherited traits with unrealistic goals.

On the positive side, when people look at you, they’re not carrying a measuring tape or staring at your stomach or hips. They are looking at your entire body. So the goal, always, should be to achieve appropriate proportions.

If you have broad hips and they are as narrow as they are ever going to be, work on your shoulders. Build them up so the proportions work.

If your arms look thin compared to your body, do exercises tat will keep them toned, eliminating the unhealthy loose-skin look that is the ban of some very slim women.

Exercising and fitness are all about being the best you can be- but work within your inherited limits.

More small fry

Q. I am invited to a wedding at which children are not invited. I am breastfeeding, however, and feel that it is only fair that an exception be made in this circumstance. Do you agree?

A. I do not agree. A small baby can be even more disruptive at a wedding than an older child. If you cannot express your milk and and leave your baby with someone you trust, this will be a wedding you should not attend.

Marriage abroad

Q. I don’t want to elope, but I don’t want to be married in my home town, either. I would like to holiday and marry in some romantic place and hope that family and close friends will join us. Is this practical?

A. Many people do, but it can be a hassle. In some countries, it is next to impossible or a long period of residency is required before you can get a licence. Talk to tourist boards or consulates. ( Incidentally, contrary to popular opinion, ship’s captains do not have the authority to marry couples.)

Tongue in cheek

Q. We are thinking of having funny wedding invitations with our baby pictures on a postcard with the message “Who would have thought it?” My mother is appalled, but I think our guests will love it. What do you think?

A. If you are having a casual wedding, your friends will enjoy the laugh and will get the message that it’s an informal get-together rather than a reception. If yo are having a more traditional wedding your invitations are sending the wrong message.

Cancelled Wedding

Q.I have received some news that has resulted in my thinking of cancelling the wedding. The invitations have been mailed. If I should decide on this huge step, how should it be done? I don’t want to pass along my reasons.

A.Have announcements printed from you (or your parents, if they are the hosts) ‘announce that the marriage of Mary Smith to Stephen Wall will not take place.’

Small fry not welcome

Q. I want my wedding to be an adult affair, with the exception of having my four year old niece in the wedding party. Will guests who have children be insulted when their children are not invited when their is one child on hand?

A.The wedding party is always an exception. It’s not only acceptable but usual for a formal wedding to be an adult affair, even though children are in the bridal party.

Q. I am having thank-you notes printed and don”t know if, before the wedding, they should be from both of us or just from me?

A. The “thank-you”should be printed or embossed and the message should be hand written. You might want to say thanks on behalf of both of you for shower gifts and wedding gifts received before the wedding. After the wedding, say thanks as a couple. And why shouldn’t the groom write his share of the notes?

Your wedding has two separate elements, and you have to be at the top of your game for both of them.

The service is a sacred time, when you will fulfill the religious and legal obligation that will bind you to each otherfor life.

The reception is a time to celebrate the joy of your union. It’s party time.

Be prepared

Start with a list of everything that must be done, and put an estimated cost beside each item. Thenhave a meeting with those who may be paying some of the bills.

This is essential; there should be no unpleasant surprises for those who may be making financial contributions. If the prices expand( and they often do), any additional costs must be approved by the person writing the cheque.

When the finances are in place, then add a date to each item, along with the name of the person responsible for making the decision.

If your clear about when each decision must be made, and who will bear the cost, and who will bear the cost, you will begin to feel that the job of planning your wedding is less overwhelming.

A final piece of advice. Something will go wrong. It always  does. But don’t let it matter. Your goal isn’t perfection; it’s about having a joyous day.
