Let’s face it, you won’t always get what you want. No matter how fantastic your friends and family are, there will always be the possibility of an inapppropriate party theme or the friend that brings the Gastly Gift. Never fear, you just need to hone those acting skills. Stand in front of the mirror, feign total excitement, flash your broadest smiles and say”Thank you this ceramic lavalamp is just what I need.” Remember, when your long-lost high school pal Sal veers off your registry list and gives you a handwooven basket covered with fake ivy and filled with gourds from her own garden, you can’t pout like you used to whenSanta didn’t bring the Christmas gifts you wanted. Put on that cheery smile you’ve been practicing and act like the gracious Bride-to be that you are.
Laughter Is The Best Medicine
Keep your sence of humour at all times! This is the most important rule for the bride-to-be. If you laugh your way through even the most awkward moments, not only are you guaranteed some great memories, but everyone else will have fun ,too. Besides, when your maid of honour brings out the slide show with your spiral perm, acid washed jeans and kelly-green suede pixie boots, you can have a giggle of relief that at least you’re not committing those fashion crimes now.
Remember, your friends and family organized these parties to shower you with pretty and useful items for your new adventure, and to shower you with their very best wishes for the journey you about to begin as a Mrs. So even though the gifts may not be to your tastes and the games may be silly, be gracious that these wonderful women are in your life and care enough to celebrate your next chapter. With a smile on your face, make sure to express your appreciation to everyone involved-especially your bridesmaids.
At the end of the day, these showers are being held for you, because people love you, so even if you are wearing a hat made of ribbons, have a few laughs and let down your hair. This is a time to let go of your stress for a few hours. Let yourself be in the spotlight and have some fun. With a sense of humour, you’ll be laughing all the way to the bottom of the gift registry.

Tell Them What You Want, What You Really, Really Want
Be vocal and be honest. Remember, what your bridesmaids don’t know can hurt you. The best technique for getting showers you’ve dreamed of is telling your bridesmaids (and everyone who will listen) what kind of parties you like and which ones you definitely aren’t up for for any point in your life! If umbrella drinks and pinatas are your thing, talk them up. After all, if people don’t know you would rather skin yourself and lie in salt than play pin the penis on your fiance, you can’t blame them when you’re wearing the blindfold and fumbling with a replica of his appendage.
Do not dive into the drama
For some reason wedding preparations can bring out the nasty side of people. Family feuds erupt, jeolous freinds lash out and things can get downright dirty. Do repeat this mantra; I will not under any circumstances play into the drama that may unfold. “Even if your mother in law to be uses a shower as a time to introduce you to her freinds as ” the one he finally settled on,” or your brothers girlfriend announces her engagement as you stand up for the champagne toast meant for you. Hold your head high and don’t dive into the drama. The shower wrecker will look like the idiot and you can drink your champagne with poise and dignity.

First comes love, then comes marriage, but before that comes your bridal showers! Annabel Griffiths offers pointers on staying sane during these sometimes stressful celebrations.
THE moment the engagement ring goes on your finger, your life suddenly changes-you are now a bride-to-be. Women who never daydreamed about their wedding are amazed at how quickly their day-planners get filled, and even wedding savy gals are astounded by the whole new world that opens up to them once they step on the path towards “I DO.”
Your mind becomes a folder of checklists: confirm the DJ, meet with the officiate again, choose the best caterer, phone the wedding planner about the tulle, ask the florist about peonies for the ceremony.
As you fall asleep at night your mind scrolls through the guest list. You wake from nightmares in which the invitations where printed with the wrong date. The first thing you do in the morning is step on the scale: will you fit into your Alfred Sung wedding dress? And of course everyone wants to throw you a wedding shower. How can you handle it all?
Take a few deep breaths, then read these tips to keep you sane and let you maintain joy as you head into uncharted territory of… Shower Season.
Beware of the surprise Bridal Shower
Regardless of how many times you tell your bridesmaids you don’t want a surprise shower, your pleas may be likely ignored because people can’t resist the challenge of catching you unawares. In the months leading up to the wedding, be prepared. If you’re going out for dinner with your mum, for tea with auntie Bertha or toilet plugger shopping with one of your bridesmaids, beware: it could be a ploy to get you somewhere for a surprise bridal shower. Be sure to put on an outfit you feel pretty in and that’s all-age appropriate. You don’t want to show up at great-aunt Gladys’ place wearing your baby tee with “SLUT” written across the front.

I went to bed the night before, freaking out. I got up in the morning, freaking out. What was I doing! What was he doing? We were 26, and we were getting married. It was such a bad idea-clearly we were too young. Everyone knows the true best age for a first marriage is 45. I remember getting a brown paper bag and breathing into it that morning. I was sure that he would’nt show up. It was awful and wonderful. It felt like going to the guillotine with a really fabulous dress on.
Wears latter I have come to realize that there are two things that happen. Two people get married. And two people have a wedding. These things don’t have a lot to do with each other. I wasn’t worried about being a wife that day; I was worried about being a bride. I should have given more thought to the whole wife thing, but I was 26 and it was all about the right wedding music. What if our relatives got drunk? OF course somebody was going to get drunk- it woundn’t be a wedding if they didn’t. Getting married wasn’t going to throw me over the edge, but being a bride was surely going to finish me off.
When I was 26 years old, holding mt head between my knees, I didn’t know I was about to go on a wild adventure. When we celebrated our anniversary this year there were no big parties. The bride and groom-wore sweat pants and dirty gym shoes. We ordered pizza. We drank water. This time around there’s a paper bad too-with cheap reading glasses, ibuprofen for the grooms creaky back and the brides popping knees. And just like the first time, it went off without a hitch.

Take a breath break-or three. “Even these mindful breaths can help in a stressful moment,” says physician/psychotherapist Dr. Lucinda Sykes. And it’s easy to do:
. Decide how long you will be on the breath break. Release all other thoughts and be present in your breath. You are one.
. Sit in a relaxed, upright position, hands resting on your knees. Experience yourself as present in the room, noting sounds and smells without thinking of them. If you keep your eyes open, rest them on a neutral surface like a blank wall. Feel your feet on the floor, and the contact of your body in the chair.
. Don’t change your breathing or think about it. Stay with your direct physical experience.
. When thoughts or feelings distract you, just notice this and turn your attention back to your breath. It’s not necessary to stop or change your thoughts. Feel each breath as though for the first time. You will notice immediate relaxation.
. Practise often. Five mindful breaths can rejuvenate you during the workday or any day.

Dry,dull and sallow skin are all the signs of stress, reports esthetician Jeanet Allison of Toronto’s Jeanet Spa and Salon. She offers these helpful tips to get things glowing:
. Treat yourself to a facial every four to six weeks.
. Stay hydrated. Drink six to eight glasses of water each day.
. Exfoliate regularly to remove skin-cell buildup.
. To dry out pimples, use a product containing zinc oxide.
. If you have dark circles under your eyes, try an overnight cucumber mask.
. Get a glow on with a glycolic peel every six weeks, and set up an appointment a week before the wedding.
Salvage Your hair ” Sress tightens the scalp, affecting blood circulation,”notes Dominic Ianuzzi, co-owner of the Epoca hair Group, in Toronto. “Hair looks dulled, and growth can slow. If your super stressed, you may even lose hair.” Here’s Ianuzzi’s prescription:
. Ask your stylist for a scalp massage. It’s relaxing and promotes blood circulation that results in healthier, shinier hair.
. Treat yourself to a deep oil treatment for extra shine and vitality. Have one once a week-it’s a nice way to chill out!
. Have colour done a week before the ceremony, so you won’t have to worry about your roots showing.
