Want t do as the Hollywood set does? On W-day, quick-change into a different dress post-ceremony. Actor Selma Blair did exactly this when she recently wed Ahmet Zappa, arriving at the altar in a pink satin gown created by Karl Lagerfeld, then changing into a black version for her reception. While mixing up wedding wear is a tradition in many cultures, such as Hindu and and Chinese, now it’s hot with hip, haute brides looking to make a fabulous fashion statement. If you love the idea, but don’t have the bucks for two dresses, Cathy Cooper of Toronto’s Urban Bride suggests choosing a gown you can wear more than once. Consider a beautiful beaded number and top it with a satin fur-trimmed jacket at church; or try an antique lace coat over a sexy column you can unveil for your first dance. What better way to show your party people the many styles of you.

The age-old custom of the groom’s cake is resurfacing at many modern celebrations. Traditional, the confection was fruitcake, sliced and packaged in monogrammed boxes and given as a favour to the unmarried female guests. It was thought that if placed under her pillow, the treat would spur her Prince Charming to pop the question. Lisa Hanslip of Calgary’s The Wedding Planner says the role of the groom’s cake is less defined today-it’s simply a whimsical tribute to the man of the hour.” The design of the groom’s cake is typically inspired by his interests,”Hanslip shares” so there’s a little piece of him at the wedding.” If he’s a golfer, feature a slab fashioned as a golf tote; if he loves movies, commission a cake decorated in the spirit of his top flick. As for flavors, Hanslip dishes the filling du joir is dark chocolate. Wondering when to serve his dessert? We suggest on your sweet table, alongside your traditional layers of love.

TIE ON ONE

Why should you have all the fun with yur W-day wardrobe? Get your groom to add a dash of serious panache to his gear by trying to be bold, beautiful tie on for size. Get him to push the fashion envelope and forgo the bow tie in favour of a longer, less traditional style-it looks slick and allows him to express his unique manly style. Spots, stripes and bold colours (yes, even pink!) are a few of our favourite options this season.

1. If you met on a blind date, use a “blind” seating arrangement for your rehearsal dinner. Guests pick a number out of a hat to get their table assignment, making it easy for everyone to meet new people.

2. If you met in college, toast with champagne glasses etched with your college emblem at the reception.

4. Rehersal-dinner invitations can be printed on a balloon or on the back of a photo jigsaw puzzle featuring you and your groom.

5. Commission a cartoon version of your courtship. Print it in your ceremony programs.

6. Have the diamond from from your grandmother’s engagement ring set in a necklace you’ll wear for the wedding.

7. Plan a scavenger hunt for the young guests the day before the wedding.

8. To customize your wineglasses, tie pretty ribbons in your wedding colours around the stems or insert monogrammed drink stirrers.

9. Have a family friend greet guests at the airport as a fun welcome wagon. Stock the wedding van with refreshing beverages and snacks.

Avoid Contingency Invitations

You know the deal:”If I invite Sharon, I’ll have to invite all my sorority sisters.” If including her means you have to add 12 more guests (or risk bad karma), drop all of them.

Pick your fights carefully

You may win the battle over not inviting your three great aunts, but if this results in you and your mom, not speaking you’ve lost the war. Make your case, but if the argument gets heated, it’s better to allow a few extra guests.

Stagger your invitations

If neither sets of parents will budge on their lists, suggest this fix: You choose an A-list of people everyone can’t live without (closest family members and friends). Then compile a B-list of all those “it’d-be-nice-to-have-them” folks. Send A-list invites earlier than usual, maybe eight to ten weeks ahead. For every regret that comes in, send a B-list invitation. Just be sure to send those at least a month before the wedding so B-listers don’t feel as if they’ve received a last minute invite (trust me: people notice).

Create an Intimate Affair

If, in the end, you and your parents simply can’t cut the list to a reasonable size, rethink your plans. It might make more sense to have a small ceremony and reception with immediate family and best friends only. Then, after the honeymoon, you can host another, more casual celebration to which everyone is invited.

How to take control of your invite list

If you were picturing a small family and friends wedding (100 guests tops) but now, two months later, your tally is hitting the 300 mark (Do you really have to invite your mom’s manicurist?), don’t despair. Check out our top lists for managing that list.

Evenly Divvy Up The The Numbers

If your parents plan to invite 30 friends, you can’t limit his parents to just 20. And even though it seems that the majority of the list should be reserved for family and friends who mean the most to you and your fiance, consider giving up a decent number of slots for your parents’ favorite people- especially if Mom and Dad are footing the bill.

Ditch The “And Guest”

Those without a fiance or long time love can come solo. Tell single friends that space is tight. On the brighter side, It’s often more fun to attend weddings alone-your pals won’t have to entertain an outsider who does’nt know any of the other guests.

Skip Your Coworkers

Sure, your lunch buddies would have a blast ( then they’d get to see the centerpieces you’ve been raving about), but unless you hang out with these people outside the office, there’s no need to include them. The exception? Your boss or assistant, who you can invite without setting off a chain reaction. But if you really need to trim, limiting your list to friends and family can keep the head count in check.

Cut Out The Kids

Yes, they’re fun at weddings-but they’re also an easy cut to make. Chop out everyone under 18 or lose all but the first cousins, nephews and nieces, just be consistent, and if possible, let parents know they’ll need a baby-sitter before the invite goes out.
